Sony Alpha Mirrorless Digital Camera NEX-6Y 1

Sony's Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Zoom Lens (Black) is a compact interchangeable lens camera that delivers high-resolution images using an APS-C size 16.1MP CMOS sensor. In addition to still photos, the NEX-6 records full HD 1920 x 1080 video in 60p, 60i, or cinematic 24p. Whether shooting stills or video, the high-resolution sensor works with the BIONZ processor to create sharp, detailed images.

The camera accepts Alpha NEX E-mount lenses, including normal-range, wide-angle, wide-to-telephoto and portrait-to-long telephoto zooms, mid-range, wide-angle and macro primes, and wide-angle and fisheye converters. Using optional Alpha NEX Camera Mount Adapters, you can also use Alpha A-mount lenses on the camera.

The included 16-50mm Retractable Zoom Lens has an electrically-driven zoom mechanism. With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-75mm, it has a normal zoom range allowing you to capture wide-angle shots, portraits, and everything in between. The lens has a maximum aperture of f/3.5 - 5.6, with a minimum aperture of f/22 - 36 for greater depth of field. ED glass and aspherical lens elements correct for curvature of field on the wide-angle end and spherical and chromatic aberration on the telephoto end, improving the accuracy and quality of the entire image. Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization enables clear, blur-free images and video. The lens measures 2.6 x 1.8" / 6.60 x 4.57 cm (maximum diameter x length), but its retracting mechanism allows it to collapse to only 0.19" (0.48 cm) long for easy storage and transport. The lens has an angle of view of 83-32°, with a maximum magnification of 0.215x.

The camera is equipped with a large 3" (7.6 cm) 921K-pixel TFT LCD monitor. The screen's angle can be adjusted. The LCD also features peaking. The XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF is an electronic, eye-level through-the-lens viewfinder with a 2359K-pixel resolution and a high contrast ratio.

The NEX-6 has Fast Hybrid Autofocus, a feature commonly found only in DSLRs. It combines phase detection AF for quick response when tracking fast-moving subjects (vital when shooting at up to 10 fps), and contrast-detection for more precision. A further refinement in focusing is Peaking AF display, which makes manual focusing more precise by highlighting the edges that are in focus using a color of your choice (white, red, or yellow).

Wi-Fi capability is built into the NEX-6, and it's also compatible with Sony's PlayMemories camera apps. Using these two features, you'll be able to do things like tether your camera to your smartphone with the ability to see the image on your phone and use your phone to trigger your NEX-6. You can also do time-lapse photography, or transfer photos directly from your NEX-6 to your smartphone (allowing you to share them directly with friends) or immediately upload photos to social media sites like Facebook.

Quick Navi control puts Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual functions at your fingertips, along with many other creative options, giving the NEX-6 a DSLR feeling without the DSLR bulk. A Photo Creativity interface has settings like Background Defocus, Color, Vividness, as well as most Picture Effects that can be easily changed and seen in real time, using the control dial.

The NEX-6 features a six-image layering technology, which quickly takes six photos in low light and combines them into one photo for a sharper picture in Hand-held Twilight mode, and to control blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode. Auto HDR (High Dynamic Range) is also built-in. It automatically takes multiple images of high-contrast scenes and combines them for a picture with improved contrast control. The built-in flash is also useful as a fill light in low-light situations.

The Multi-Interface Shoe on the top of the camera not only allows you to use Sony flashes, it's compatible with Handycam accessories such as microphones for recording high-quality sound, opening up further possibilities for shooting video.

16.1 MP APS-C Size CMOS Image Sensor
The same sensor format that Sony builds into the full-sized α DSLRs. With 13 times the area of the typical point-and-shoot image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between "snapshots" and "photographs," delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and pleasingly blurred backgrounds.
E-Mount Lens Compatibility with A-Mount Lens Option

The camera accepts Alpha NEX E-mount lenses, including normal-range, wide-angle, wide-to-telephoto and portrait-to-long telephoto zooms; mid-range, wide-angle and macro primes; and wide-angle and fisheye converters. With optional Alpha NEX Camera Mount Adapters, you can also use Alpha A-mount lenses on the camera

With 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-75mm, lens has normal zoom range allowing you to capture wide-angle shots, portraits, and everything in between. Lens has maximum aperture of f/3.5 - 5.6, with minimum aperture of f/22 - 36 for greater depth of field. It contains 9 total elements in 8 groups,
including 1 ED (extra-low dispersion) glass and 4 aspherical lens elements that correct for curvature of field at wide-angle focal lengths and spherical / chromatic aberration at telephoto end. The lens features 7 circular aperture blades, as well. Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization results in clear, blur-free photos and videos. The lens measures 2.6 x 1.8" / 6.60 x 4.57 cm (maximum diameter x length), but its retracting
mechanism allows it to collapse to only 0.19" (0.48 cm) long for easy storage and transport. The lens has an angle of view of 83-32° and a maximum magnification 0.215x. It contains an internal stepping motor, as well as a distance encoder

Auto Exposure Difference, Exposure difference Level (1.0-6.0 EV at 1.0 EV step), off
6-Image Layering

The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. The camera then combines the data from the 6 different images up to ISO 25600 to create a single image. This method is used to control blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or to get cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode.

Sweep Panorama Technology
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together for up to a 23MP image size. The camera is capable of up to a 202° sweep angle (16mm focal length).

Anti-Motion Blur Mode
Corrects for subject movement to capture clean, sharp images in low light. The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six creates a single image that minimizes subject blur.

Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum.

Peaking AF Display
The Peaking AF display makes precise manual focusing much easier by highlighting the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focal plane can make or break your shot.

Manual Focus Assist
Greatly magnifies the viewfinder image (4.8x, 9.6x) when you touch the focus ring, making it easy to get razor-sharp images. Works with E-mount lenses only.

Enhanced Tracking Focus
Tracking Focus continuously tracks a user-designated subject and is now more effective at tracking people. If the subject turns away from the camera, face-detection tracking automatically switches to subject tracking and continues tracking.

Face Detection Technology
The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends. It can prioritize children or adults.

Smile Shutter Technology
Captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply select the Smile Shutter mode and the camera takes the picture automatically. You can prioritize children or adults and adjust the smile sensitivity.

Headphones (or "head-phones" in the early days of telephony and radio) are a pair of small loudspeakers that are designed to be held in place close to a user's ears. They are also known as earspeakers, earphones or, colloquially, cans. The alternate in-ear versions are known as earbuds or earphones. In the context of telecommunication, a headset is a combination of headphone and microphone. Headphones either have wires for connection to a signal source such as an audio amplifier, radio, CD player, portable media player, mobile phone, electronic musical instrument, or have a wireless device, which is used to pick up signal without using a cable.

Sony Nex 5N - Sony Digital

Nex 5N

Sony nex5 N

Sony Digital Nex5

The Sony Alpha NEX-5N is the fourth model in Sony's NEX line of APS-C format mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Just as the NEX-C3 replaces the NEX-3, the 5N is a direct replacement for its predecessor the NEX-5, using the company's latest 16.1MP CMOS sensor in place of the previous 14MP chip. Although the 5N is nearly indistinguishable from the NEX-5 on the outside (and is bound to be regarded as such by many casual observers), it is actually a very different camera, and one that is worthy of serious attention.

The two most significant changes to the NEX-5N compared to the NEX-5 are its new sensor, which we have been very impressed by in the NEX-C3, and the addition of a touch interface - unique in Sony's current Alpha lineup. When images of the first NEX cameras appeared, many people assumed their lack of buttons indicated touch-sensitive operation, so it's interesting to see a touchscreen finally appearing on the 5N.

While the NEX-3 and 5 were close siblings, differentiated mostly by styling and HD video capability, the NEX-5N and NEX-C3 are more like cousins. The 5N has a wider ISO range, spanning 100 - 25600 (equivalent) and adds support for the new FDA-EV1S electronic viewfinder. Like the co-announced NEX-7, the 5N also offers the option of using an electronic first-curtain shutter that promises to substantially reduce shutter lag. Furthermore, when paired with native E-mount lenses, it gains the capability to compensate for certain optical aberrations (namely lateral CA, vignetting and distortion - each of which can be turned on or off at the user's discretion). The NEX-5N also adds support for the new LA-EA2 SLT Alpha mount lens adapter which will also be compatible with the NEX-7.

Even with the addition of these enthusiast-friendly features the 5N still retains its appeal to compact upgraders. The same iAuto and Photo Creativity modes from the C3 are available on the 5N, along with a generous helping of the 'Picture Effects' creative processing options, available in PASM modes.

Sony NEX-5N specification highlights

Touch-screen display
Electronic First Curtain shutter
Revised 16.1MP CMOS sensor
ISO 100-25600
10fps continuous shooting mode (at full resolution)
In-camera CA, vignetting and distortion correction
Auto ISO limit of 3200 (increased from ISO 1600 in NEX-5)
Creative Control results-orientated user interface
Picture Effects processing options
1080p 60p HD movies in AVCHD format

The NEX-5N is almost identical to the 5 in terms of form, but there have been some significant changes made to its function. The 5N's new stand-out feature is the introduction of a touchscreen that provides alternative access the the camera's operational controls, as well as adding few additional features that take advantage of this input method.

Cosmetically, the NEX-5N (on the right) is nearly identical to the NEX-5, with the exception of a slightly angled top-casing and a silver flair around the power switch. The overall appearance of the 5N has been further streamlined by creating a single magnesium-allow top plate. The hand-grip material has has a more refined feel too, but doesn't seem to offer any more grip.

The Swan Lake Nature Study Area (formerly called Lemmon Valley Marsh) is a small conservation area in Lemmon Valley, Nevada. It contains marsh, alkali mud flats, and high desert. The Lahontan Audubon Society describes it as "a nearly unspoiled wetland in the midst of suburban housing and warehouses" and designates it a Nevada Important Bird Area. It is a notable location for birding; over 150 species have been observed there.
The Swan Lake Nature Study Area consists of over 1,800 acres (7 km2) of land, with water supplied by the nearby Reno/Stead Sewage Treatment Plant. The size of the actual wetland varies seasonally and yearly, depending on the amount of precipitation, between 100 and 1,000 acres (4 km2). It was formally dedicated as a nature study area in 1999, following several years of planning by Reno-area environmentalist/writer/photographer Bob Goodman. The lead organization in planning and creating the conservation area was the Nevada Army National Guard, which contributed about 360 acres (1.5 km2) and performed preliminary ecological studies. Other sponsoring organizations include: the Bureau of Land Management; the City of Reno; the Lahontan Audubon Society; Nevada Division of Wildlife; the Nevada Land Conservancy; Washoe County Parks and Recreation Department; and Washoe County School District. Features include an observational boardwalk into the marsh and educational signs about the local ecology.[2]

Sony Nex-3 & Nex-5

Ever since Panasonic and Olympus created their Micro Four Thirds mirrorless system, all the talk has been about what the other players in the market will do. Micro Four Thirds has been steadily building its market share, seemingly without response from the three companies that account for over 80% of DSLR sales (Canon, Nikon and Sony), to the extent that 'Micro' risks becoming the generic term for these mirrorless systems ('When will Brand X make a Micro camera?' has become a fairly common thread title on our forums).

The waiting is now over as, following the showing of some mock-ups at PMA and a torrent of teasers and leaks, Sony finally officially announced its NEX system last month. The details are exactly what you'd expect - HD video capable APS-C sensors in small bodies. What might take you by surprise is just how small the bodies are - the NEX-5 in particular being tiny. In fact the cameras are too small to include in-body image stabilization units, as found in Sony's SLRs, and instead use lens-based 'Optical SteadyShot'. These NEX cameras will come under the Alpha brand but do not make use of the Alpha lens mount, instead using the completely new all-electronic E-mount.

Sony has made clear that it is aiming for compact camera users who wish to upgrade (a market it estimates at around 10 million potential buyers), rather than trying to offer a second camera for existing DSLR users. And the NEX models have more in common with compact cameras than DSLRs - including very few buttons and a resolutely unconventional interface.

As part of this interface it offers not only the standard Sony option of showing a small description of each selected option, it also has a full user guide built in to the camera. Relevant sections of this guide are available in each shooting mode to give hints and advice about everything from how to hold the camera to how to achieve an out-of-focus background.

The company told us that it felt its competitors had merely miniaturized, rather than revolutionized, so it's no surprise that the NEXs are more than just the company's SLRs with the mirrors removed. Instead you get a wholly new system with metal-bodied kit lenses (something we didn't expect to see again in a mainstream product), and an accessory port instead of a conventional flash hot shoe.

As with Samsung and Panasonic, Sony's background is electronics (rather than cameras) so the incentive to move away from the optically complex DSLR design to one based more around electronic displays makes sense. Sony's situation is a little different in that it bought the respected Minolta brand and know-how but, despite plenty of new models, it has only been able to make a big impression on the DSLR market in a few selected regions. Consequently, it's understandable that it might want to combine its DSLR knowledge with its electronics expertise to establish some compelling competitive advantage.
