HDR is a process that combine 3 or more images into one.
When you use bracket, your camera will take 3 picture
1 balance exposure
2 under exposed
3 over exposed.
HDR processing will take the 2 underexposed picture and find the "hightlights" in that underexposed picture and combine it with the 1. balance exposure.
it will also use 3. over exposed picture and find the "shadows" in that picture and combine them all together.
The "arty" or "painting" effects you see on some the picture in this group is from settings in "photomatix" and sometime post processing in photoshop. it's normally the "light smoothing" and 'lumnoscity" setting that creates this effect.
