Malaysia began its search for a new Government administrative centre in the 1980s to disperse some development away from Kuala Lumpur. A site at Prang Besar in the district Sepang was chosen, in view of its strategic location between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The New Federal Government Administrative Centre is named as “Putrajaya” in honour of Malaysia first Prime Minister, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, for his invaluable contributions to the nation.

While Kuala Lumpur will remain as the country’s capital city as well as premiere financial and commercial centre, Putrajaya will play the role of the new Federal Government Administrative Center.

Construction of the new city began in August 1995. When the city is fully developed, it will have a total of 64,000 housing units which will cater a population of around 320,000 people.

Putrajaya is the place in Kuala Lumpur where the tourist will find all the upcoming federal administrative capital buildings. They are innovatively designed and are in harmony with the surroundings. Some of the magnificent structures include the Putra Mosque, the Putra Square, the Prime Minister’s Office and Residence, the Palace of Justice, and the Department Of Civil Aviation. Adjoining all of these is the palace where the Sultan stays.

The main bridge is like the Khaju Bridge in Estahan, Iran. Its upper level forms a part of the boulevard. The huge three-deck bridge provides access to vehicles, monorails and pedestrians alike. Apart from linking the Precinct 1 and Precinct 2, this Bridge has been designed to be a special feature of Putrajaya. The piers accommodate exemplary dining restaurants within the support provided by the main pillars.

The Malay name of this bridge is Jambatan Putra and was designed by the architect Perbadanan Putrajaya as well as constructed by him. It crosses the Putrajaya Lake which is all of 650 ha and is man-made. The water body was created to act as a natural cooling system to the city as also for recreation, fishing, water sports and water transport.

Putrajaya is a planned city, located 25km south of Kuala Lumpur, that serves as the federal administrative centre of Malaysia. The seat of government was shifted in 1999 from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya, due to the overcrowding and congestion in the Kuala Lumpur areas. Nevertheless, Kuala Lumpur remains Malaysia's national capital, being the seat of the King and Parliament, as well as the country's commercial and financial centre. Putrajaya was the brainchild of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad. In 2001, Putrajaya became Malaysia's third Federal Territory after Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.
Named after the first Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, the city is situated within the Multimedia Super Corridor, beside the also newly developed Cyberjaya. In Malay/Sanskrit, the words "putra" or "putera" means "prince", and "jaya" means "success" or "victory". The development of Putrajaya started in early 1990s, and today major landmarks are completed and the population is expected to grow bigger.
